Tempeh Bacon
WHAT YOU’RE MAKING:
Delicious bacon style tempeh. Save a pig - make this instead.
INGREDIENTS:
1 package of plain tempeh
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
2 tablespoons of maple syrup
2 teaspoons of liquid smoke (any flavor you like)
a few drops of sriracha (optional)
METHOD:
Slice your tempeh thinly and place in a container that will hold the marinade.
Combine the soy sauce, maple syrup, liquid smoke and sriracha if using in a bowl and pour over your tempeh pieces. Allow to marinate for 5 minutes up to 1/2 hour.
In a non-stick skillet, turn the flame to medium. Begin placing your tempeh into the pan. Place as much as you can fit in your pan without overlapping. Lower the heat to a low flame. Cook the tempeh until golden brown on one side and then flip to brown the other side. You can add a little water (about 1-2 tablespoons) to prevent buring. Continue until all the tempeh is cooked.
As the tempeh bacon cools it will become crunchy. You can store this in the refrigerator for up to a week wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or in an airtight container. When you want to use again, reheat in a pan to crisp it up.
HOW TO USE:
Make a TLT (tempeh, lettuce and Tomato) sandwich
Crumble into some Just Egg or tofu scramble
Crumble on top of a spinach salad
Add to a plate of homemade pancakes
Add to some cornbread
